"The Number of Entries in the Response Exceeds the System Limit" Error Message

What is the issue?

When multi-editing groups or campaigns within the system, you may be presented with the following error:

Error: The number of entries in the response exceeds the system limit

This error seems to occur more frequently with device targeting edits, but can happen during any multi-edit operation. In addition to the error, you'll also notice that the status for each of your edits will be Failed.

What causes the issue?

This error occurs because there is an API limit put in place by each of the publishers which restricts the number of edits that can be made at once.

How to diagnose and fix the issue

If you have failed multi-edits and you'd like to check whether this error is to blame, first click Admin to go to the Activity Log, then look for the row which has the Failed status. Click on the Activity ID on the left of the grid and you'll be presented with the relevant error message. If it's the one you see above, you've found the source of the trouble.

Luckily, this is a simple fix: just split the amount of edits made into smaller batches, then post each batch to the publisher before making any more edits.
