Training: Bulk Uploading to the Platform

What You'll Learn

In this training article, we'll show you how to:

  • Make large amounts of changes to your objects (keywords, creatives, campaigns, etc.) at once.
  • Create a bulk sheet using an app like Microsoft Excel.
If you're uploading a very large file (bulk sheet), we recommend adding it to .zip file first to reduce processing time.

What is a Bulk Upload?

As a marketer, it can be very time-consuming to add objects (such as keywords or creatives) to the Platform manually. That's where the bulk upload functionality comes in handy.

With a bulk upload, you can add multiple objects all at once -- saving you time to work on something more important. Bulk uploads can be performed by either pasting details into a text box in the Platform (up to 1000 rows), or by uploading a .csv or Unicode .txt file created in a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel.

You can use bulk uploads to add any of the following objects within the Platform:

  • Keywords
  • Groups
  • Creatives
  • Campaigns
  • Negative keywords
  • Placements
  • Location targets

How to

There are two steps to a standard bulk upload: creating your bulk sheet and uploading it. Below we'll briefly explain each of these.

How To Create A Bulk Sheet

Before you can create a bulk sheet, you need to know which columns to include. To do this, go to the main tab that contains the relevant objects (e.g. Keywords) and click the Bulk add/edit link in the lower-left of the screen. You'll see a list of [Optional] and Required columns. Optional columns will always be shown in square brackets. Everything else has to be included for the bulk upload to succeed. With that info to hand, follow these steps:

  1. Open a spreadsheet editor like Microsoft Excel.
  2. Replicate the column headers (as above) in row one of a new spreadsheet.
  3. Fill in each of the values in the columns; for example, Account, Keyword, [Status], etc. For more info about which values you can use, please see our in-depth Support Center article.
  4. Save your bulk sheet as a Unicode .txt file or .csv. You can also .zip your file for quicker processing.

How To Upload Your Bulk Sheet

Once you've created your bulk sheet, you can upload it by following these steps:

  1. Go to the relevant grid in the platform (the main Keywords tab, for example).
  2. Click the Bulk add/edit link in the lower-left to go to the upload page.
  3. Click the Choose File button and select the file to be uploaded.
  4. Next it's time to decide how you'd like to post the changes to the publisher. You can choose between a To be sent or Held status, depending on when you want your changes made. After that, click the Next Step button to finish the upload. Note: For large files, processing can take some time.
  5. After processing, check the Activity Log to verify that your upload succeeded.

You can also bulk add negative keywords by clicking the Bulk add negative keywords link from the main Keywords tab.

Try it yourself

Want to try out the bulk upload process before doing it for real? Not a problem. With our nifty interactive widget below, you can run through all of the steps we explained above in a totally safe environment. Once you're confident with how it all works, you'll be ready to head to the Platform -- and really hit the ground running.

If you're ready to begin uploading your own bulk sheets to the Platform (and saving time), we've got something to make the task even easier.

Click the links below to download pre-populated bulk sheets for the most frequently used bulk tasks. We've included all of the required columns in these samples, but please do check the bulk add/edit screen in the Platform for any optional columns you may want to add.

Note: Please be sure to open these files in Microsoft Excel (or similar spreadsheet editor).
