Training: Creating Dimensions

What You'll Learn

In this training article, we'll show you how to:

  • How to create new dimensions.
  • How to edit and delete dimensions.
  • How to tag your objects with dimensions.

Handy Tip: A good way to think of dimensions is like a set of personal labels you can use to analyse your data in a way that's tailored to you.

What Are Dimensions?

Organizing all of your objects (keywords, creatives, etc.) can be a real headache, especially if they range into the tens or even hundreds of thousands.

That's why dimensions are so useful. By tagging an object with a dimension, you can segment and categorize your objects in all-new ways. Want to filter by color, shape, model, or size? A dimension can help you do this and much more. Think of your dimensions as handy labels that let you manage, track and report on your objects better than ever before.

The powerful dimensions feature is built into the Platform, so you can get started creating your own dimensions right away -- and below we'll show you how to do just that.

How to

In this section, we'll provide step-by-step instructions on exactly how to create dimensions and tag your objects with them using the Platform.

How To Create A Dimension

Edit section

Creating your first dimension is a piece of cake. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. First, click the Admin link in the upper-right of the Platform.

  2. Next navigate to the Dimensions sub-tab.

  3. On this screen you'll see a grid. Click Create (the blue 'plus' icon above the grid).

  4. Next give your new dimension a name. For example, if your campaign is related to cars, you might pick Make, Model or YearYou can also enter a description if you'd like. However, please make sure that you do not use a dimension name that's already a Platform column header (such as Creative Type), as this can cause problems.

  5. You can open the Advanced Settings section to choose which type of dimension you'd like to create. Tagging Only mode provides faster performance, but Tagging and Rollup will give this dimension a sub-tab of its very own under the main Dimensions tab. This will give you advanced reporting capabilities within the Platform. Find out more in our dedicated Support article.

  6. Finally, click Save and your new dimension will appear in the grid. You may notice that once you've created your first dimension, a new Dimensions tab will appear at the top of the main screen.

  7. To edit or delete any existing dimensions, you can go to the main Dimensions tab at any time, then click Create/Edit dimensions in the lower-left corner. From here, you can use the grid's standard edit/delete buttons to manage your dimensions. It may go without saying, but if you delete a dimension from this screen, all of the objects tagged with that dimension will have the tag removed.

How To Tag Objects With Dimensions

Now that you've created a dimension, you'll want to tag objects with it so that you can start enjoying the advanced reporting features it brings. You can tag objects via single-editmulti-edit or bulk-edit depending on your needs.

The sections below will explain each of these tagging options in a little more detail.

Single-edit Dimension Tagging

Follow these steps to tag your objects one at a time. It's not the fastest way when you've got a lot to tag, but it's perfect for making quick singular changes.

  1. Navigate to the relevant main tab where the object lives; for example, the Keywords or Creatives tab.

  2. Use the checkboxes in the grid to select a specific object, then click the Edit button ('pencil' icon) above the grid.

  3. A pop-up bubble will appear with a drop-down menu. From here, you can either select your dimension from the drop-down list and type in a value for that dimension, or you can click Go to Settings to add dimension tags from there. Either way works just fine!

  4. Once you're done adding your dimension tags, be sure to click Save either in the pop-up or on the settings screen. Voila! Your new dimension tag will now be applied to the object.

Multi-edit Dimension Tagging

To add dimension tags using multi-edit, just use the exact process outlined above for single-edits, but select more than one object to be tagged during step 2. Note that you'll need to use the pop-up bubble to add your dimension tags, and that you can only add one tag at a time.

Bulk-edit Dimension Tagging

You can use the Platform's handy bulk upload feature to add large volumes of dimension tags at once. Bulk uploading also allows for the quick tagging of pre-existing objects, using the same or different tags across objects:

  1. Create a bulk sheet as normal.*

  2. Ensure that your bulksheet includes a header for the Dimension(s) you'd like to tag objects with.

  3. Once you've decided which tags you'd like to use for each object, simply enter the relevant values into the dimension's column in your sheet.

  4. The last step is to upload your bulksheet to the Platform. Once the upload has been processed, you can see your newly created tags in the grid by adding the Dimension column from the View Builder.

  5. If you should ever need to clear out dimension tags in bulk, you can do so simply by leaving the appropriate cells blank within your dimension's column. Any objects that have existing tags for the corresponding dimension will have their tags cleared out when you overwrite a blank value.

Need a quick reference when tagging either campaigns or groups with your dimensions? Here are the column headers you'll need in your bulk sheet for a bulk-tagging these object types. Other objects, like keywords, will be similarly structured but with different header names:

  • Required columns for tagging campaigns: [Account] [Campaign] [Dimension1] [Dimension2]
  • Required columns for tagging groups: [Account] [Campaign] [Group] [Dimension1] [Dimension2]
