Tracking Revenue for Managed Placements

Introduction

The Platform supports two options for tracking revenue for managed placements:

  1. Tracking ID (e.g. keywords)
  2. Combination of placement URL and creative ID

The tracking ID method

To use the Tracking ID method, follow these steps:

  1. Add a Landing Page URL for your placements, and tag this URL with the relevant tracking parameters.
  2. Once a tracking ID has been appended to the URLs, make sure that this tracking ID parameter has been parsed out in the Tracking IDs section (Admin > Revenue Tab > Tracking IDs > Tracking ID sub-tab). Also make sure that the creative ID parameter has been parsed out in the {creative} Parameter tab.

Once the above is completed, conversions stemming from placements should then come through. The Platform does this by matching the value under the Keyword ID column to the Tracking ID value in the placement URL.

The placement URL and creative ID method

Another option is to track placements by utilizing creative-level tracking. To employ this method, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that all creative URLs have the {placement} parameter and [creative_id] parameter on URLs.
  2. Once these two parameters have been added on all creative URLs, make sure that the placement parameter has been parsed out in the Tracking IDs section (Admin > Revenue Tab > Tracking IDs > {placement} Parameter tab). Also make sure that the creative ID parameter has been parsed out in the {creative} Parameter tab.

Once the above is completed, conversions stemming from placements will come through by matching the value under the Placement column to the placement name in the grid.

Note: There is a drawback to this second method, as explained below.

Important note on the placement URL and creative ID method

Because Google does not provide sub-directory detail in the {placement} parameter, any revenue uploaded to a group that contains placements with multiple sub-directories will be assigned to Unattributed.

This happens because Google only returns the base domain of the website the placement ad was displayed on. If you do choose the method, note two things. Firstly, Google supports a {placement} dynamic insertion parameter that will return the domain of the placement. Secondly, placement URLs must include the {placement} parameter and the {creative} parameter.
