The Google Display Network (GDN) allows you to target users who have certain interests. For example, if you sell golf clubs, you may want to place ads on sites that are visited by golf enthusiasts. A placement is essentially a destination on the web where your ad could be shown, such as the specific golf site or page that you would like to target. 

Google offers two types of placements: Automatic and Managed. Marin offers Managed Placement support via bulk upload, however, at the present time, bulk uploads will need to be done through Marin Search, rather than MarinOne. 

We will walk you through both our MarinOne and Marin Search support of Placements and GDN in this article. 

Managing Placements

In MarinOne

  1. The first step, as always, is to log into MarinOne.
  2. Next, click on the Search button ('magnifying glass' icon) from the left-hand navigation.


  3. From here, click on the Placements tab at the top of the grid. If you hover over this tab, you'll see a Quick Link icon, indicating that this tab will link you to to Marin Search.


  4. From the Placements tab in Marin Search, you can bulk add or edit your placements. We'll talk more about how to add placements in bulk later in this article.
  5. You can create a report of your existing placements by clicking on the Create Report button. 

If you have specific ideas for your GDN targeting, you can use a bulk upload to add placements.

Adding Placements in bulk

  1. In MarinOne, click on the Placements tab at the top of the grid. If you hover over this tab, you'll see a Quick Link icon, indicating that this tab will link you to to Marin Search.


  2. From the Placements tab in Marin Search, click the Create + button.
  3. On the Bulk Add/Edit Placements screen, you'll see both a text box and an area to upload a bulk sheet file.
  4. Follow the instructions on-screen to prepare a bulk sheet, then either paste it into the box provided or upload it as a Unicode text file or .zip.

How To Create A GDN Campaign 

If you're looking to advertise on the Display network, the first thing to do is create a campaign. To do that in the Marin Platform, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the main Campaigns grid.
  2. Click the Create + button at the top of the grid.
  3. Name your campaign and choose Google as the PCA.
  4. On the settings screen, look for the Campaign Type drop-down and select Display Network Only.
  5. Adjust the other settings as normal, then click Save to create your new campaign.

Adding Placements in bulk

Important Note: Bulk uploading files will soon be transitioning to MarinOne, so bulk upload functionality for Placements will no longer be available in Marin Search. 

The placement report

The Publisher Placement Report identifies new placement opportunities based on where your Display ads are being shown on the Google Display Network.

The Placement Report is based on data from the Google Automatic Placement Performance Report. Placements can be reviewed at any time and easily added as either managed placements or negatives. Only placements that are not already managed will be shown.

Note: Marin does not support Automatic Placements outside of the Placement Report. Once a Placement Report is generated, the Automatic Placements will not appear in Marin.

How To Add Managed Placements

The Placement Report can be found via Admin > Expansion in the Platform. This page shows the impression and click data for any automatic placements in the account. Note that managed placements will not show clicks and impressions. From this page, users can quickly add managed placements and add negatives to their account.

To add a managed placement from the list, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Placements tab.
  2. Click into the Placement Report sub-tab.
  3. Click the blue 'plus' icon.
  4. Click the Process Placements button.

This will add the placement to the specified location (group of the seed placement or a new group).

How To Add Negative Placements

Add negative placements by following these steps:

  1. Click the red 'minus' icon.
  2. Click the Process Placements button. Use the drop-down to specify where the negative placement will be added. This will add the placement as a negative to either the group, campaign, or all Google accounts.
Rejecting Placements

You can also reject placements that you don’t want to see again. Simply click the black icon and then click Process Placements to reject the suggestion. Rejected placements will no longer appear in the placement report.

Important Notes About the Placement Report
  • The Placement Report can also be sorted by clicking on the column headers. 
  • Please note that the Placement report must first be enabled from the Admin > Expansion > Placement Sources > Publisher Placement Report section. You should start seeing data within 24 hours

  • MarinOne and Marin Search do not currently support Google Smart Display campaigns.
