Tagging URLs via Bulk Upload

When integrating with the Platform, often your URLs will need to be edited to include required tracking parameters. An easy way to tag URLs across all your publisher accounts is to create a bulksheet report to edit and then upload to the Platform.

How to Tag URLs via Bulk Upload

Create a report to edit all URLs in your account

  1. Depending on what objects you are editing, select the Keywords or Creatives tab. For more information on how to perform a bulk upload, please refer to the article Training: Bulk Uploading to the Platform.
  2. Click the View Builder link and include the necessary columns for creating a URL bulksheet. See the A Guide to Bulk Editing and Adding for details. Save your changes.
  3. Click the Create Report link and check the box next to Include items with zero clicks. All other fields are defaulted correctly. Click Continue.
  4. Wait for your report to finish. Completed reports are visible via the Reports link at the top right of the page

Download the completed report and tag your URLs

  1. Delete the report details rows (typically Rows 1 to 5), leaving the column headers as the first row of your file.

  2. Make sure that 1) there is a destination URL value under the Destination URL column, and 2) any tracking parameters have been stripped off. If using redirects in your destination URL, you will need to have the Click Through URL column instead of the Destination URL column. This column should be filled with your landing page URL without any parameters.

  3. Save the sheet as a Unicode file.

Upload your bulksheet

  1. Depending on what objects you are editing, click the Keywords or Creatives tab.
  2. Click the Bulk Add/Edit link in the Related Tasks box on the bottom left side of the page.
  3. If your file contains fewer than 1,000 rows, copy and paste the bulksheet into the box. Note the pre-set column headers, where optional columns are in [brackets]. Since you already have your required columns, be sure to replace the pre-set column headers.
  4. If your file contains more than 1,000 rows, upload the file.
  5. Select whether you want to post the file now, or hold it for review. We recommend holding all files to allow time for QA and review.
  6. Click Next Step.
  7. If asked whether you want to create objects, select NO. Since you are only editing destination URLs, you should not be creating any new objects. Click Continue.
  8. URL Builder will then append all tracking parameters to the URLs. Your file will be queued in the Activity Log, accessible via the Admin link at the upper-right of the page. If you chose to hold your file, you will have to manually post the file by clicking Post Now when you are ready to send the changes to the publisher. Files in To Be Sent status will post to the publisher during the nightly sync.

If you are warned that objects are going to be created

This could be due to Excel format changes when the report was opened.

  • Check if your upload includes broad match modifier keywords, as Excel has been known to alter keywords and capitalization's for broad match modified keywords.
  • Check the exact formatting of the highest-level objects being created. For instance, if you get a warning that 1 group, and 10 keywords are being created, check the settings for the group.
    • To do this, navigate to the Groups tab, and click on the existing group in question
    • Then navigate to the Settings sub-tab for this group
    • Check to make sure the group name doesn't have any trailing spaces or carriage returns, as Excel is likely to remove these when the report is opened.

To avoid this issue, follow this best practice for opening reports containing broad match modified keywords or objects with trailing spaces in their names:

  1. Click Download to save your report in the Platform as a CSV file.
  2. Open up a new blank Excel sheet and click the Data tab at the top and then click the From Text button.
  3. Locate the file and click Import.
  4. Select Delimited from the first step and click next.
  5. Click Next until you see your Keyword column in the second image below.
  6. Click anywhere on the first column to highlight it, and in the Column data format at the top select the Text radio button, then click Finish.
  7. Click OK in the next dialog box indicating which cell to insert the data.
