Negative Keywords

Introduction

As you may know, negative keywords are a way to refine your targeting strategy by excluding specific keywords that do not work well to drive conversions or revenue for your business. Negative keywords are an important part of any keyword targeting strategy and can help you improve performance and refine your targeting.

Want to learn more about managing negative keywords in Marin? Read on to learn more.

A Note about match types

Google

Google negative keywords will default to Broad Match unless otherwise specified. To specify match type in your negative keyword bulk upload, you will simply include the Match Type column and specify Broad, Phrase, or Exact in the corresponding rows.

Microsoft

Microsoft supports Phrase and Exact Match negative keywords. To specify match type in your negative keyword bulk upload, you will simply include the Match Type column and specify Phrase or Exact in the corresponding rows.

In MarinOne

Negative keyword management in MarinOne can be found by clicking on the arrow next to the Keywords tab and selecting Negative Keywords

From here, you can view all of your negative keywords across all of your search publishers. To add additional negative keywords, simply follow the instructions listed in our bulk upload article.

In Marin Search

Understanding the Negative Keywords tab

In Marin Search, the Negatives sub-tab is available under the main Keywords tab. This section will display all of the negative keywords your are managing in the application. In MarinOne, you can find a quick shortcut to manage negative keywords in Marin Search.

You will also find subtabs displaying negative keywords affiliated with each campaign or group. Like other objects in the application, you can search, sort and filter which negative keywords are displayed. In addition, the Negative Scope filter allows you to limit the display to only campaign-level negatives, or group-level negatives.

Adding Negative Keywords

In Bulk

  1. Navigate to the Keywords tab.

  2. In the lower-left of the screen, click on Bulk add negative keywords link under Related Tasks.

  3. To add negative keywords to:

  • All publisher accounts: From the Publisher Account drop-down menu, select All Accounts. Enter the desired keywords in the text box. These keywords will be added to all linked Google and Microsoft campaigns and all groups in all linked Yahoo! campaigns.
  • All campaigns in a specific account: From the Publisher Account drop-down menu, select the account name. Enter the negatives in the text box and these will be added to all campaigns (or all groups for a Yahoo! account).

  • Specific campaigns in a specific account: From the Publisher Account drop-down menu, select the account name. You can either specify the Campaign from the Campaign drop down menu, or include Campaign as a column in the upload.

  • Specific campaigns and groups: From the Publisher Account drop-down, select Specify in Rows. Specify the Account, Campaign (and Group, if desired) as columns in the upload.

From the Grid

Negative keywords can be added directly from the main Campaign and Groups tabs.

  1. Using the checkboxes, select the Campaigns or Groups where you wish to add the negatives.

  2. Click the Edit button ('pencil' icon) above the grid and select Negative Keywords from the drop-down menu.

  3. Enter the desired negatives. For Google negatives, you can specify the match type (use " " for Phrase match negatives and [ ] for Exact match negatives). Broad match is only supported when using multi-edit from the grid, not by bulk.

Note: Because Yahoo! does not support campaign level negatives, if you attempt to add a campaign level negative to a Yahoo! campaign, the application will create group level negatives for every group in that campaign.

Note: Microsoft supports up to 10,000 negative keywords at the campaign and group levels. Each negative keyword is limited to 100 characters.

Deleting negative keywords

From the Grid

You can remove negative keywords using single or multi-edit in much the same way that you would add them. Just follow these steps:

  1. Go to the main Campaigns or Groups tab.

  2. Click into the campaign or group you'd like to remove negative keywords from.

  3. Click the Negatives sub-tab.

  4. Use the checkboxes to select the negative keywords you'd like to delete, then click the Delete button above the grid.

In Bulk

You can also delete your negative keywords using a bulk sheet. Just follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Keywords tab.

  2. In the lower-left of the screen, click on Bulk add negative keywords link under Related Tasks.

  3. To delete negative keywords, you'll need to include the optional Status column with the value delete or deleted for each one. When you run the bulk sheet, any negative keyword marked with this status will be deleted.
  • The Status column is optional; however if you include it blank or with the value Active, the negative keyword will be created if it is not already present.

  • If you include any value other than Delete, Deleted or Active, the row will generate an error: Status value not recognized.

Important notes

  • Please note that negative keywords cannot be tagged with dimensions.

  • Google negative keyword lists in the Shared Library cannot be synced to the Platform at this time as it is not supported in the API yet.
