Importing International Characters from the Platform into Excel

Table of contents

Introduction

Search marketers may utilize letters from other character sets, especially if marketing internationally. Character integrity is preserved in the application. However, there may be situations which warrant creating a report for download which includes text containing letters such as ä, ë, ï, ö, or ü. When opening the downloaded report in Excel, the foreign characters may be replaced be question marks.

Workaround

To work around this, please follow these steps:

  1. Export and download the file from the application as usual. The document will be available as a CSV file.

  2. Launch Excel but do not open the document.

  3. Go to the Data menu tab.

  4. In the Get External Data section, select From Text.

  5. Highlight the document and click on the Import button. This will launch the Text Import Wizard.

  6. From the File Origin pulldown, select 65001: Unicode (UTF-8).

  7. Choose the correct delimiter (Tab is the default).

  8. Select the worksheet cell in which the Wizard should begin to place the document (the default is A1 and should suffice).

The file will now be opened with all original characters retained.

To save the document and retain character integrity, remember to perform as Save As command and save as type Unicode Text.
